Starting in January of 2019, SWCC, along with support from Clarke County Hospital, will be offering classes for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). With the success of last year’s Emergency Medical Responder training, and with ever-increasing demand, the new EMT program will be open to anyone who qualifies and will be held at the Osceola, IA SWCC campus.
According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the demand for EMTs in Iowa will continue to increase by more than 15% through 2026.
Iowa and much of the Midwest are continuing to feel the pinch for trained EMTs. With these shortages along with increased demand, rural Iowa emergency service providers often have to prioritize calls or juggle services if a trained EMT is unavailable. Many EMTs serving now continue to volunteer for double shifts or extra calls simply to assure services continue uninterrupted.
“With the success of last year’s EMR (Emergency Medical Responder) course,” said Megan England, Coordinator of Emergency Medical Related (EMS) Training Programs for SWCC, “And with requests from local fire stations and current technicians, adding an EMT course just makes sense.”
The EMT course is open to all who qualify. Requirements for the EMT class include:
- Applicants must be 17 years of age or older
- Applicants must have the ability to speak, read, and write English
- Applicants must pass a criminal background check
- Applicants must have documentation of a physical exam (prior to clinical / field phase of the program)
