Over the past few months, the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office has embarked on capital improvements to facilities including updated office space and reworking of jailing facilities and additional infrastructure. While much of the updates are functional, improving used space and offering safer facilities, they also bring opportunities for new employment within the department. Chief Deputy Sheriff, Brian Akers recently posted job notices for two important positions with the organization
“With the recent updates and improvements, we’re looking to fill some highly valuable positions on the team to help in our day-to-day operations,” said Chief Deputy Akers.
The positions Akers refers to include both a Full Time Dispatcher as well as a Part Time combination Dispatcher / Jailer.
“These positions require candidates with unique, success-driven personalities who have a dedication and focus on the safety and welfare of our entire community,” said Akers. “These positions both add value and support to our busy responders.”
As Dispatcher, candidates can expect to perform duties focused on emergency and non-emergency information gathering and relaying that information to the appropriate team member. This information will also be added to a statewide and national database system for tracking and collaboration. Dispatchers are also responsible for radio and digital/computer updates that go out not only to local and regional law enforcement, but also fire, ambulance, and other responding units, directing them to appropriate locations.

For the Part Time Jailer/Dispatcher, the sheriff’s department would need candidates looking to be cross trained for both positions and able to fill the duties for each role as necessary.
Candidates for Dispatcher / Jailer position at the Clarke County Sherriff’s department can expect to be trained in the duties outlined above as well as overseeing the day-to-day operations of the county jail, ensuring the safety and security of inmates, county staff, and the public.
“Of course, we’re looking for candidates who have a vision of building a career in law enforcement and a dedication to serving the public,” said Akers. “This work isn’t for everyone but, done well, it’s as rewarding as any job out there.

Akers went on to explain that both positions, while considered “Entry level” start with IPERS investment opportunities as well as an aggressive pay scale of more than $21.00/hr., with options of more, based on experience. Candidates for these positions will be trained, but ideal team members will apply with the ability to: communicate with clarity and ease (bi-lingual is a plus), work independently as well as with a team, and be able to show up on time prepared to work. Background checks are mandatory.
Both positions are currently open, and the Sherriff’s Department is actively interviewing. Candidates must be 18-years of age or older and should have, at a minimum, a high-school diploma or their GED.
“This is the perfect opportunity start a law enforcement career path, “ said Akers. “The right candidates will not only gain valuable experience, but we also offer training and certification opportunities to help them grow in their positions.”
