Osceola City Council and local officials have been working on implementing the technology needed for the streaming of City Council meetings through the City’s Web site for over a year. With the assistance of Terry Taylor and his team from Communications Solutions, a camera with audio support was installed in council chambers earlier in 2018. After much needed upgrades in the internet service to the City Hall building, including robust security and firewall upgrades, the video and audio signals were finally broadcast online and streamed successfully through the City’s Web site. In a test during the December 4th City Council meeting, viewers from around Clarke County as well as central Iowa and beyond gained access to the public Osceola City Council meeting video through their home computers and on mobile devices.
The decision to provide streaming of the Osceola City Council meetings came from discussions amongst council members about increasing community attendance and engagement. With schedules becoming increasingly busier and more hectic, the addition of streaming to the city’s Web site provides a convenient solution for those looking to attend, making meetings accessible regardless of schedules or even bad weather.
“With testing being such a success,” said Ty Wheeler, Osceola City Administrator, “We’re excited to launch the public City Council Live streaming page starting at the next City Council meeting.”
The next Osceola City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 18th, starting at 7:00pm. Streaming services for the public part of the meetings will be made available through a link found on the home page and navigation menus at www.OsceolaIA.net. Barring any technical difficulties, all future City Council meeting will be broadcast through this new service.
“Whether it’s concerned citizens or even students looking to learn more about how our local government works, it’s just a great way to foster better community engagement,” said Mayor Thomas Kedley.
To stream the Osceola City Council meetings, you’ll need a computer or mobile device with strong internet access and the ability to broadcast video and audio. You, then, will simply need to go to www.OsceolaIa.net and click on the “Osceola City Council Live” button (seen to the left) or the link found in the “Mayor & City Council” navigation tab.
Osceola City Council meetings take place every first and third Tuesdays of the month. You can check meeting schedules through the city Web site at www.OsceolaIA.net or by calling City Hall at 641-342-2377 during regular business hours.
